A Visit From The Tad Fairy at Tipton Orthodontics

At Tipton Orthodontics, we were fortunate enough to have Dr. John Graham, one of Arizona’s leaders in the use and placement of temporary anchorage devices (or tads), come to our office to train us on the procedure. Dr. Graham lectures on the placement of tads to doctors across the country. He also has a patent on the tads we will be using in our office.

Tads are mini-screws which are positioned in strategic locations in a patients upper and/or lower jaw to aid in the ideal positioning of the teeth. The placement and removal of tads can be done using local anesthetic but WITHOUT the use of needles. Most patients return to work or school upon leaving the office with minimal to no descomfort. In some cases, the use of tads helps correct bites that could otherwise require orthognathic surgery. Thanks again to Dr. Graham for sharing his expertise with our staff. At Tipton Orthodontics, we are excited to bring this procedure to the forefront of orthodontics for our patients.

Bad Breath Got You Down?

garlicBad breath can be a real downer, especially when you are out on a date with that girl or boy you’ve had a crush on all semester! However, bad breath can be prevented!

Bad breath, or as your doctor may call it “halitosis,” is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grows in your mouth. This bacteria gathers on bits of food in your mouth and between your teeth and release sulfur compounds making your breath smell. Some foods, like garlic and onions, may contribute more to bad breath because of oils the food the food releases, and smoking is also a major cause of bad breath.

There are several myths around bad breath. Here are some common myths and the truth behind it all:

Myth #1: Mouthwash will make my breath smell better

Mouthwash will make your breath smell better, but it is only a temporary fix. If you use mouthwash, just know that you will still need to brush and floss when you get the chance as mouthwash alone will not kill all of the bacteria producing germs in your mouth. When choosing a mouthwash, pick an antiseptic with plaque-reducing compounds. Also make sure any dental products you choose comes with the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of approval.

Myth #2: I brush my teeth; I will never have bad breath

Brushing your teeth will save you from having breath, but the truth is most people only brush their teeth for about 30-45 seconds! You need to brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes, twice a day to give your teeth a thorough cleansing. It’s also important to brush your tongue, which is where a majority of odor causing bacteria like to hang out. Lastly, flossing to remove food and plaque between the teeth will also help reduce your chances of having bad breath.

Myth #3: If I don’t smell it, then my breath is fresh

This is a false assumption in every sense of the word! The truth is that the breath you breathe out is not the same breath coming out when you talk to someone. When you breathe you are not using your throat as you do when you are talking; and when you talk more breath moves over the back of your mouth where bacteria is causing bad breath.

#1 TRUTH: Brush your teeth twice a day (for at least 2 minutes), floss at least once and visit your dentist every six months…this way your breath will always be fresh! Not letting your nerves get the best of you on your date? That’s up to you!

Is My Dentist an Orthodontist?

What it takes to become an orthodontist.

 An orthodontist is a dental specialist that has not only completed college and 4 years of dental school, but has also completed an additional 2 to 3 years residency program accredited by the ADA of advanced education in orthodontics. After receiving the additional years of training and education, an orthodontist has learned the skills that are required to treat the misalignment of teeth and facial development with braces, headgear, retainers and other methods. Only a dentist that has completed the additional years of training and education after dental school is an orthodontist.

Orthodontists do much more than simply put on braces; preparation for oral surgery, and treatment to keep the jaw joints healthy are a large part of an orthodontist’s duties. Becoming an orthodontist is a  rewarding career choice and it can make a difference in the way people feel about themselves for their entire lives.

Step 1

Earn a Bachelor’s degree. You generally must have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree to enter dental school.

Step 2

Enroll in a dental college to attain your DDS (Doctor of Dental Science). This will take four years of studying biology, social sciences, and anatomy as they relate to dental health.

Step 3

Pass the Dental Admissions Test. This test certifies that you have the necessary skills to become a practicing dentist; no dentist is allowed to operate a practice without passing this exam.

Step 4

Enroll in a Science of Orthodontics course. This will take an additional two to three years. This course will begin teaching you the arts of your chosen profession.

Start a practice.

Becoming an orthodontist is very challenging and takes hard work and dedication.
